What Makes You So Special?
What Makes You So Special?
A few days ago, I decided to update my Resume. Yes, being an
Entrepreneur Designer and Yoga teacher, for some reason I still felt the need
to keep a Resume ready. I made myself comfortable on my meditation cushion in
my yoga space, the laptop screen open in front of me, and I began adding points
on to the document.
10 minutes into this, my gaze drifted to the lush green view
of the Banyan tree in front of me. The leaves looked new born, bright green and
healthy, as the raindrops washed over it, the long chocolate brown roots
looking rejuvenated.
Being a creative person at heart, I always welcome a magical moment that might inspire me or leave me in a state of wonder. In that moment, I suddenly felt like I was experiencing the latter. I began to ponder, why was it that I felt this need to list down my professional achievements good and proper? As I looked out at the slender branches of the enormously dense tree, which were now dancing gently to the wind, a thought dawned on me.
It?s because looking at this piece of structured document, I
felt special. Special because it listed out some of the outcomes of what I had
really worked hard for. It validated to me that I was adding value to society
through teaching Yoga and creating designs by employing Indian Craftsmen. Nothing
wrong with that. Just as your resume would to you, mine too gave me some solace.
I had managed to achieve a small part of many more aspirations to come. That led to another question - did my Resume
truly define who I am? Did it really define the being that I am in this moment?
Nature with its magnetic allure, I looked out to suddenly see the most beautiful parrot sitting precariously on a branch. This mischievous bird with its deep red beak and resplendent green feathers, looked as if it had perched itself right there to respond to my musings. Without any resume to it?s name, let alone even a name or identity, this bird looked pretty special as it was, just sitting there, looking blissful as ever, enjoying the now light drizzle.
What makes you so special? What makes each one of us so
special? Sometimes, the answer need not be profound. It can be as simple as
this queenly looking parrot ? just hanging out on the branch and being. The
fact that you exist; that there is no one is this world exactly like you, is
what makes you so very special. Just by being, being the person you are, which
does not mean your name, what you do, where you live and how much you earn, but
simply that you are here in this world, is what makes you special like no
other, literally.
Feeling amused at how nature was responding to my contemplations as if reading my mind, I gazed outside to notice that the delightful looking parrot was now gone. Instead sat close to its spot, a rather large crow, cawing away. My mind was clearly flowing with thoughts and the Resume completion had taken a backseat. Would I call this crow special? I?m not sure. It wasn?t exactly beautiful like the Parrot. But, if I were to use the above logic, then yes, this crow could be described as extremely special. I began to draw a parallel. When we say special, we reserve this word for only a select few. Special in the dictionary is defined as better, greater, or otherwise different from what is usual.
Or otherwise different from what is usual ? and since only one of you is living in a
current population of 7.7 billion (Findings up till June 2019 according to the
most recent United Nations estimates elaborated by Worldometers.), I?d say that
is phenomenally different from the usual.
By applying this
concept to everyone around us, recognizing that each person is special in their
own distinct way, irrespective of their shortcomings, can help compassion,
respect, love and bliss well forth within and without.
Divine qualities
exist in each one of us. Sometimes they get clouded with our own thoughts,
beliefs and experiences, but they are still very much present. We can begin to embrace
our own uniqueness and beauty, understanding that a great Resume is a great
bonus, aspiring for improvement is a great aspiration, but you being here
exactly as you are ? that is something special nothing or no one can compare
to.
Just as my thoughts
began to clear, the crow, the special crow, flew away into the sky. I noticed a
sliver of sunshine and the expansive blue sky behind the clouds began to
emerge.
